The City That Never Sleeps

Even a working Thursday night is an entertaining sight after dark.

The first picture was taken on a busy sidewalk. I found myself pushed against the chainlink fence while navigating the crowd, and immediately noticed the dynamic of using the chainlink to frame the background of a moving city. The movement of the cars in the picture was intentional to showcase the bustle of Boston. The second picture was taken two minutes later in the same location, but focused on the contrast between dark shadows and the cloudless blue night sky. I focused on decreasing the exposure for the picture to emphasize this tonal contrast. The rule of thirds is especially prominent in this picture as the car draws attention towards it as the main subject of the photo.

A Late Night Adventure

Students satisfy a hungry craving for authentic Asian snacks.

Taking the first photo proved exceptionally difficult because I wanted to capture the subjects in a natural way to display the vibrant energy of teenagers in a city. The lighting of the convenience store also proved too warm and yellow for my liking, so I played with the tones in the picture. I especially enjoy how every square of the picture seems to draw your eyes in. The second photo uses a pattern of foreground and background subjects. The vibrancy of the fruits complements the neutrality of the background. It appears to tell a story of youthful curiosity and playfulness.

NEU’s Serenity is a Solace from Boston’s Bustle

Morning and afternoon sunlight strikes Northeastern’s campus.

I took the first picture while laying in my friend’s bed one afternoon. I was especially moved by the serenity and peacefulness of the afternoon sunset striking the blinds, which created an interesting pattern. For this particular picture, I focused on capturing the contrast between highlights and shadows of the photo. The second picture emanates a similar emotion, and I once again highlighted the light and dark. However, this photo draws attention towards a singular point, which provides an interesting perspective. The angle makes the shadows seem endless and ethereal.
